41 new monsters from Wampus Country

Apparently I've completely missed out on the Wampus Country blog, but thankfully the author has made some of his creations available on DTRPG with Wampus Country Tome 41: Theriospheric Transfigurations.

Forty-one animal-themed spells of dubious use to the discerning wizard, along with some notes on various animals of the Wampus Country.  Tome 41: Theriospheric Transfigurations is a compilation of material from the Wampus Country blog supplemented with new material.  The spell descriptions therein are for use with Labyrinth Lord or any similar grey-haired game, or can provide inspiration for any system which tolerates some silliness in its magic.
Wampus Country is a fantasy frontier setting of tall tales, humorous action, and winking satire.  As such, the content of Theriospheric Transfigurations may be incompatible with Very Serious Campaigns.

Check it out, it's Pay What you Want, and if you like it, I'm sure a donation would be appreciated.

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow

A little slow this week, as to be expected. The most notable item is a free adventure from 3 Toadstools

Adventures

One Waiting One Prisoner One Sacrifice - One adventure from Tim Shorts. 21 pages, $3.99

The Mad God's Jest - Free adventure from Shane Ward of 3 Toadstools. 19 pages. And did I mention it's free? Check it out.

Misc

Under-sized Adventures #1 - The Kobold Nest - Despite the name, it's just a map and vague descriptions. 50 cents.

Wormskin Issue 1 - This is more of a campaign setting than anything else. For B/X, it seems to be fairy inspired. Or maybe furry inspired, there's spells for cat people. $3, 41 pages.

The Sinister Stone of Sakkara Review — The Keep on the Borderlands, Autarch Style

Thirty-Five years ago, Gary Gygax wrote The Keep on the Borderlands as an introductory module for Basic D&D, to replace Mike Carr's In Search of the Unknown for inclusion in the basic box set. It was different from most existing modules in two notable ways. Firstly, it described with some detail a home base for the players, the Keep in the name of the module. Secondly, instead of a providing a fairly static dungeon for the players to explore, it provided a more dynamic one ruled by different factions.

As such an influential module, it has spawned numerous imitators as well as a reboot from TSR/WOTC themselves. Most of these provide far more detail than the original, easy enough since the orignal was a scant 32 pages. The Sinister Stone of Sakkara is Autarch's attempt at producing an homage, meant for their Adventurer Conqueror King System (aka ACKS) but with the exception of armor class and some classes, is more or less Basic/Expert D&D with a focus on bookkeeping. And that sort of focus in one display here, with a large amount of detail in some areas and sparseness in others.

Midnight Oliviah Review — Good Read, Not So Good Adventure

Midnight Oliviah is a module for first edition (and OSRIC and Advanced Edition Character Labyrinth Lord) from Lloyd Metcalf Inc, meant for 3rd to 4th level characters. I bought the PDF, but it's also a print product. It's described as a "mini mod", but at $5 and almost 30 pages, albeit single column, it's a bit more than that, but still likely representing a single play sessions.

Oliviah is also the name of an NPC, a tavern owner who hires the PCs to work as security for an auction of a special suit of magical armor . An artifact, actually. However, much to their dismay, part of that armor was stolen, so they must track down the thief. This requires a small amount of detective work, but after talking to a few people, they are pointed in the right direction of the suspect. Which involves a dungeon crawl of a necromancer's lair.

New OSR Titles at DTRPG/RPGNow Dec 5th, 2015

Looks like Pacesetter Games & Simulations have finally started putting up PDFs there. Given their troubled history of fulfilling orders, perhaps is a wise move.

Otherwise, really slow week.

Adventures

T1-2 The Thing in the Valley -  Strange things are afoot at the village of Rivermeet. A 3rd to 6th level adventure for 1st Edition originally from 2011. 50 pages, $9

Rules

Beyond the Wall & Other Adventures GM Screen and Reference Pack - Not sure it actually needs one, as it's a fairly simple game, but here you go. $2.50

Monstrous Miscelleany #01 Review — A Handful of Monsters

Monster Miscellany #01 is the first (presumably) in a series of small supplements from James Mishler Games introducing new monster for Labyrinth Lord. How small? Well, four monsters, one to a page. But each page is packed with a huge amount of detail (and text). While Labyrinth Lord is a Basic and Expert D&D retro-clone, the format here is more akin to the monstrous manuals of 2nd edition of AD&D, with sections on ecology, organization, where they are found, and in some cases, unique examples of the monster.

Miscellany certain describes the variety of the four different monsters, they share nothing in common. The first is the abnokh, a type of minor demon. They are tall, red, and emaciated to the point of looking skeletal. They hunt humans to eat and other unpleasant things. They are not terribly tough though, with only 3 hit dice. However they do hunt in packs, so could be a challenge. They remind me a bit of the Xill.

North Wind Adventures having sale on their print products

I was hoping they'd put their new adventures on sale in PDF form, but apparently not. They do however have them 15% off in print form from their website. Use the code BLACKFRIDAY15

New OSR Products at DTRPG — November 28th, 2015

Not too much this week, a couple of adventures and a questionable White Box supplement (What's the point of White Box if you add everything from Greyhawk and etc back in. Only different names? Like the Knight Errant instead of Paladin)

Adventures

Ogres of the Fen -  OSRIC adventure. Ogres have fled to a town and the town wants to know why. 20 pages, $6.

Tree Maze of the Twisted Druid - Originally made by the author when he was a kid in 1981.  10 pages, free.

WBO04: Stuck on Etholk - White Star adventure. $1.99, 17 pages.

Rules

Bloody Basic Bundle - Has five different Bloody Basic rulebooks (each for different genres). $19.45

Blood & Treasure RPG Bundle -  Contains the main book, the monster book (although the main book has like 500 monsters), and the player companion. $20.97 and lots and lots of pages

White Box Chivalry - Paladins and Anti-Paladins for White Box, only under different names because using the normal terms wouldn't be cool (or something). 13 pages, $1.99

d30 Collection of Height & Weight Table  - Free

Very little OSR stuff discounted for Black Friday at DTRPG

As near as I can tell (based on a 100 or so items on my wish list and trawling through the drop down box),  just Lesser Gnome's catalog.

Possibly Lloyd Metcalf's stuff.

It's hard to tell because they let you set a list price, then the actual price, and then a price for sales. But if the list price and actual price are different, it looks like it's being discounted for a sale, but it's not actually.  Just chicanery.

New OSR Products at DTRPG — Novemeber 21st, 2015

I have been sick as a dog this week. Worse, since I've rarely seen a sick dog, to be honest.

Somewhat curiously, there have been a couple of Gangbusters supplements, most notably Joe's Diner,
an adventure locale for $1.99 and Police Dispatches which is Pay What You Want

Adventures

MA: Robots Among Us -  From Jim Ward and Goodman Games comes this 20 page book on encounters with robots gone wild. $5.99

PA1 Vault of the Faceless Giants -  Indian themed B/X adventure using their (Big Something Dragon Games) psionics rules, but easy to ignore the psionics stuff. Free for the time being, 16 pages.

The Folio #4 - 4th module in the Roslof Keep campaign. 36 pages, $5.99 and for 6th to 9th level characters

Whitebox One Shot Bundle #1 - Contains 3 adventures from Small Niche Games: Return of the Mad Hermit, Swamp Dungeon of the Bandit Lord, and Tower of Boon Companions. $4.99

Dungeons in Blue - The Lava Flows Two - Geomorphs. $3.49

Ships of the Galaxy: The Monarch Courier - Ship for White Star. 16 pages, $5

All Gothic Roleplaying Accessories products temporarily Pay What You Want

I kinda thought they were, to be honest, but both of their products, A Haunted Island ( a short adventure) and Folkloric Interludes: Marriages & Brides to Evil (another short adventure) are now Pay What You Want.

Both are based on gothic literature and folklore, so worth a look if you like that and worth paying a bit to encourage the author to make more.

Vault of the Faceless Giants free for playtest

The upcoming adventure PA1 Vault of the Faceless Giants from New Big Dragon  is currently free in playtest form. If you download it now, you'll get the updated version when it goes live.

What's the catch? Well, besides it not being final, apparently it features psionics from his psionics book. Ugh, I hate psionics.

Other than that, looks pretty neat and Indian themed.

New OSR Products at DTRPG — November 14th, 2015

Kind of a quiet week, at least in the world of OSR products.

Adventures

Tower of Boon Companions - From Small Niche Games comes this White Box adventure for 3rd to 5th level characters. At first glance it looks like RQ style ducks on the cover, but they are apparently orcs drawn comically. 44 pages, $2.99

Rules

Classes of Ruin: Pirate -  Free pirate class for Labyrinth Lord. Yar!

Species Spotlight: Abhorrans - I guess this is for White Star. They seem to be like Hutts  (think Jabba from Star Wars or Pizza from Space Balls). $1.50, 10 pages.

Misc

d30 Half-Elf Height & Weight Table -  Free, but couldn't he have combined them into one file?

B/X Monster Reference Index - Looking for a B/X monster? Well, this will help you, having stat blocks for 500 critters. $2, 29 pages.

RND Issue 1 - Random fanzine. PWYW

New OSR Bundle of Holding

Well, new in the since that the bundle is new, the contents seem to be pretty old.

For $4.95 you get

  • Swords & Wizardry (Mythmere Games, retail price $10): Matthew Finch's complete 2012 rulebook recasting white-box Original D&D, plus the Eldritch Weirdness and Monster Book supplements.
  • Tomb of the Iron God (Mythmere, $4): Matt Finch's breathtaking 1st-level Swords & Wizardry module with 500 monsters and two gods.
  • Cyclopean Deeps 1: Down to Ques Querax (Frog God Games, $5): The introductory chapter in a very tough and extremely subterranean campaign across the Under Realms.
  • Demonspore (Mythmere, $7): A zealot band of Shrooms is cultivating a new god in Matt Finch's adventure (levels 3-6) for Swords & Wizardry or any OSR fantasy game.
  • Plus the "OSR Toolkit": Especially for this offer, we assembled this rich collection of free rulebooks, tutorials, magazines, and even graph paper.

For $13.17 you also get
  • Adventurer Conqueror King System (Autarch, $10): A well-integrated complete B/X-style rules set that scales smoothly from novice dungeon crawls to empire-building.
  • Stonehell Dungeon (Michael Curtis, $9.50): Michael Curtis's acclaimed megadungeon and its first two supplements.
  • Vornheim: The Complete City Kit (Lamentations, $9): Zak (Red & Pleasant Land) Smith's brilliant city-construction kit.
  • The God That Crawls (Lamentations of the Flame Princess, $7.25): A weird-fantasy race through a deathtrap dungeon, pursued by an unstoppable slime.
  • The Monolith Out of Space and Time (Lamentations, $7.25): James Raggi's controversial, not to say polarizing, Lovecraftian nega-dungeon.

Honestly, I'd say the only thing really worth the money out of that bunch is Stonehell Dungeon.  But YMMV

New Kabuki Kaiser product, I think

Castle Gargantua, $5 and 112 single column, big text pages. Presumably it's like his previous stuff, random tables. I presume it's new, because a) I never noticed it before and b) I just an email from DTRPG about it (since I bought his previous stuff), but on the other hand, it was last updated in May.

Ride the beanstalk and crawl into the sprawling halls of Castle Gargantua. There awaits the most legendary of giants and the fiercest creatures known to man. Delve further than ever for the great doors of Castle Gargantua have swung open once again, and what lies ahead isn't for the faint-hearted.
The biggest dungeon ever published by the OSR. A campaign, a massive generator, and a grotesque setting all-in-one.
A bookmarked PDF & print edition compatible with everything Old School Renaissance

His previous products, Mad Monks of Kwantoom and Ruins of the Undersomething (City?) were quite good, but convinced me that I really don't like random tables/randomly generated dungeons.

Free Adventure — The Tower of Horace Sharpcheeks

With a name like that, it must be good. Or silly. One of those.  Anyway, a free download over at the Simple D&D blog

There was a time when the wizard Horace Sharpcheeks overlooked the village of Cresthaven from atop his tower. That was until his tower exploded in a giant green fireball and Horace was never heard from again.
The owner of the Crossed Arms inn claims there is an entrance to a mysterious cavern system below the cellar spewing forth all types of monsters onto the once peaceful country side. The village elders also agree that it’s worth investigating the rumors and have put out a call to all adventurers to cleanse the site of the wizard’s tower and report back their findings. The one thing everyone can agree upon is that goblins have infested the ruins and they must go.

New OSR Products at DTRPG—October 1st, 2015

Hmmmm, I think DTRPG has done away with the OSR category. Mind you, things were often not labeled correctly so I had to check everything anyway, but I used to always scan it first. Oh well. Progress, I guess.

Help Jeff Dee get Villains & Vigilantes back

Yeah, strictly speaking not an OSR game as I define it, but I have a lot of good memories as a kid of playing V&V (though strangely, I have no memory of how the rules work).

Anyway, you may or may not know, FGU has held the rights to it even though they pretty much just sit on it, doing nothing. So Jeff Dee has started a fund to get money to try to get it back.

Korthalis Publishing having a half off sale for the weekend

At 50% off, most their stuff is worth it. Not that they are bad products (modules are the only ones I have), mind you, but most a jumble of ideas with vague stats than actual adventures.

For Gold and Glory -  The 2nd edition retro-clone is now up on DTRPG. Free

Grey Nebula: Crewmen, Con-Men, and Lawmen - White Star didn't have a whole lot of classes (though more than White Box) and this fills in some of the gaps. $1.99, 21 pages.

The Myrmidon - New class for LL from 3 Toadstools. Free, so check it out.

Misc

100 Intelligent Swords - 4 pages, $2. That's 2 cents per sword.

Last day for the Complete Oracle Kickstarter

The Oracle was a fanzine back in the early 1980s. The Kickstarter is to reprint all the issues in book form. The PDF of said book is only $5, really good deal

Lusus Naturae discounted for one day only

Lusus Naturae, a monster book from Rafael Chandler (who did the Teriatric Tome) is now only $6.66 (normally $10). Only good for tonight.

I have no idea if it's any good or not. His previous efforts tend to be a little over the top grim dark stuff, to me coming off as more campy than scary, but some of the monsters were pretty good.

DTRPG/RPGNow having d20 sale, which includes some OSR stuff

Strictly speaking, one is 3rd edition and the other is previous editions, but still, they use the 3rd SRD as its base, so I guess it counts.

Anyway, it's 15% off and OSR publishers/products include James Mishler, Tom Doolan, some BRW Games, Goodman Games, Sine Nome, Dyson Logos, Jeff Dee, Moebius Adventures, Beyond The Wall, Machinations of the Space Princess (which I don't understand isn't more popular, it's tons better than White Star), Slumbering Ursine Dunes, and Expeditious Retreat Press.

Also strictly speaking, the d20 trademark license is no more, so they aren't supposed to use that name, or at very least the logo. But eh, Hasbro probably won't notice or care.

Free racial gnome classes for Labynrith Lord — CX1 Extra: Gnomes

While the B/X rules are really quite elegant and fun, I've never really understood the point of racial classes, at least for humanoid races like elves, dwarves, & hobbits.  But if you do, and are dying to add gnomes to your game, New Big Dragon just released a free supplement with gnome racial classes, apparently a preview of a larger book of classes.

I did like the Creature Crucible line for D&D, where you could play monsters.

New OSR Products at DTRPG — September 10th, 2015

Most notably, the three adventures from the recent Hyperborea Kickstarter went up this week. A little pricey, hopefully they will come down soon.

Adventures

Beneath the Comet - For Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea, this is a adventure for 6th to 9th level characters that seems to feature no real plot, other than finding loot revealed by a magical treasure map that only shows when there is a comet. 48 pages, $10.

Bizarre Tales -  Not exactly sure what this is, besides "sandbox location and adventure" which could be anything from a hex crawl to exploring a haunted litterbox. $2.50, 24 pages. No system or level range.

Forgotten Fane of the Coiled Goddess -  An AS&SH adventure for 5th to 7th level characters. Again, following a map, this time to a jungle temple. 60 pages, $10

Ghost Ship of the Desert Dunes - Another AS&SH adventure, this time for 2nd-4th Level. About a Viking ship in the desert. 60 pages, $10

Hinterlandt:Dragedræberens grav- Sounds like an industrial band, but this is a module for Hinterlandt, apparently a Danish OSR game. 77 pages and Pay What You Want.

Revolt at the Spire - This is an adventure for White Star, 3rd to 5th level.  12 pages, $1.50

Rules

Blood & Bone - Undead racial classes for Labyrinth Lord. PWYW

Space Sword - This is in French and the preview is small, so I have no idea just what it is, but it seems to be a vaguely OSR ruleset for planetary romance style adventures (Flash Gordon and such). 82 pages and $5.61 which probably makes more sense in Euros (presumably 5 of them).

Misc

Adventure Seeds: Islands - A collection of tables to generate island adventures, and possibly, salad dressing. 8 pages, PWYW.

Gygax Magazine #6 - Defying most people's expectations, it's back with a sixth issue. This has some AD&D items as well as a complete RPG from someone I've never heard of. 68 pages, $4.99 and like always, the full sized preview gives you 40 pages

False Promises Review — Converted Adventure Needs a Bit More Converting

False Promises from Throwigames came out last year around the holidays. I didn't get it at the time since it was $5 for 20 pages, a bit too pricey for my budget for a blind purchase, but the price was later dropped to $2.50 which is more in my wheelhouse for modules I know nothing about. Indeed, I didn't know it when I bought it, but apparently it's a conversion to B/X D&D of an older module written for the company's own house system. Regardless of its origins, it actually sort of feels and looks like a late '90s 2e product than anything else.

Hawk the Slayer sequel on Kickstarter

Doesn't look like it will make it, but the sequel to Hawk the Slayer, Hawk the Hunter needs $500,000 to be finished.

Rick Wakeman is doing the soundtrack, strangely enough. The original had a really nice one.  Albeit suspiciously like Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds in places.

Free PDF from Pacesetter Games & Simulations

Their problems in actually shipping out stuff people have ordered is fairly well known (not to mention their unfinished Kickstarter), and as part of a way to apologize for this, they've made one of their adventures free in PDF, Secrets of the Unknown, which is sort of an add-on to TSR's B1.

Be sure to change the shipping method from "Downloadable" to "PDF"

New OSR Products at DTRPG — September 2nd, 2015

Busy week. Probably will get the library adventure.

Adventures

Adventurous Locations III - The Infamous Drunken Harpy -  This is more a location than adventure, set on a floating casino/brothel. 57 pages, $2.99

Ghosts from the Dark Wood, Second Printing - old module from Johnny Rook now in a 2nd edition. 32 pages, $6.

The Bridgeway -  a 4th to 6th level adventure for Swords & Wizardry. 12 pages, $1.50

The Lunar Library of Thurindisar - The premise for this sounds pretty neat, the PCs are hired to explore a library on the Moon. For Labyrinth Lord and looks like a low level adventure. 27 pages, $2.50

Rules

Classes of Fantasy: Faerie - No description, but a class for Labyrinth Lord. 50 cents, 1 page

Classes of Fantasy: Harpy - Same as above.

Ivory Relics - new magic items for Swords & Wizardry. Free

Ivory Relics II - new magic items for Swords & Wizardry.  12 pages, $1.99. Hope it's better than the free one.

The Aeva - new class for White Box that  apparently "buffs" other classes. 4 pages, $1

The ABCs of Space Opera, Volume 1: A - L - Sci Fi stuff for Labyrinth Lord. 98 pages, $10

The Palimor - new class for White Box that sounds a lot like the 3.5 Warlord. 4 pages, $1

Avalon Games having a $1 sale

I dunno if they actually have any OSR stuff (they used to sell Arrows of Indra, but not anymore), but they do have a wide range of clip art,

Most of it doesn't live up to modern standards, but if you want to create an early Judges Guild style product, it's perfect. All of it is colored pencil stuff with a lot of gratuitous nudity.

Stonehell Dungeon 2 progressing

Michael Curtis is one of the better adventure writers around, so it's not too surprise he's in big demand from companies to write modules. However, that means that he has less time to devote to his own masterpiece, Stonehell Dungeon.

However, it looks like all is not lost, he just posted an in progress index on the Facebook page for it.

New Megadungeon Map from Tim Hartin/Paratime Design

For my money, the best dungeon mapper in the OSR is Tim Hartin of Paratime Design. Not just the mapping style, but the design of his maps. He's back with a new megadungeon

This PDF contains fifteen individual maps that combine to create a sprawling mega-dungeon. The maps are comprised of standard dungeon chambers, natural caves, water areas, submerged areas, multiple elevations, and one giant chamber that stretches across four pages. There are multiple entrances leading from above and multiple stairways leading deeper into the dungeon (which are beyond the scope of this document). Each map has several options available, including black or white backgrounds, numbered or non-numbered areas, and secret doors on or off (for ease with VTT programs)
Looking at it, it seems to be his best yet. So if you are the sort that loves stocking dungeons, check it out, it's a very good deal at $6

Purple Duck having a $1.50 stock art sale

I'm not sure why, but all their stock art is priced at $1.50 a piece, which is half or more off their usual price of $3 to $4.

I've bought a lot of their art at 30% off during the Christmas and Christmas in July sales, it's really good stuff for the most part. Most of their stuff comes in color, grey scale and line art and I've used mostly their stuff for the cover art of my character classes...

Edit: Over now

Ivory Relics — Free Swords & Wizardry sourcebook

13 pages of new magic items

Ivory Relics contains Suits of Armor, Shields, Melee Weapons, Missile Weapons, Greater Wands, Greater Rings and Staffs suitable for any Swords & Wizardry White Box adventure. More than fifty magic items!

List price of $1.99, current price free. Presumably no elephants or narwhals were harmed in the making of it.

New OSR Products at DTRPG — August 27th, 2015

Woof. The cold I usually get at the end of September is afflicting me now, I guess because the weather has been so cold.

Adventures

Folkloric Interludes: Marriages and Brides to Evil - I guess this is an adventure (the "sample" is just two title pages so it's unclear what the product is), apparently based on German Folklore.  For OSRIC, $1.25 and 8 pages.

Return of the Mad Hermit - Small Nice Games returns with a Swords & Wizardry adventure for levels 1-3. 26 pages (giant single column), $1.99

Space Cede - Short sci-fi adventure and includes a new class. 8 pages, $1

The Folio #3 -  The first one was one of the worst adventures I've ever seen, but I guess enough people like it that it is now up to part 3. $5.99 and 32 pages. And on the plus side, it has Jim Holloway art.

Rules

Classes of Pop: Superhero - Superhero (the comic book sort, not 8th level fighter) class for Labyrinth Lord. 2 pages, $1

Misc

Game Night Issue One - Apparently this is a comic book about people playing a Swords & Wizardry adventure. $1.99 and 29 pages.

Tome of Tomes Volume 2 - 100 books that might be found on a sage's bookshelf. $3.60, 19 pages.

Gold Box games are on GoG (and Eye of the Beholder)

I pretty much bought all of these back in the day (not the Savage Frontier ones though). Now they are available from GoG (only the Forgotten Realms ones, not the Dragonlance), and also the Eye of Beholder games, and lastly Menzoberrean and Dungeon Hack

Thursday, August 20, 2015

New OSR Products at DTRPG — August 20th, 2015

After a very slow week last week, things are back to normal

Also Humble Bundle is having a bundle with Might & Magic games

Adventures

Book of Lairs - 26 monster lairs (and some new monsters) for the ACKS game. Strangely priced at $7.83 and 74 pages.

The Dreams of Ruin - The PDF is free, but now you can get it in print. Couldn't make it through the PDF, much too artsy for my taste.

The First Sentinel - 3rd to 5th level Labyrinth Lord adventure. 39 pages, $6.99

The Sorcerer's Tome - Another 3rd to 5th Level adventure, this time for Swords & Wizardry. 14 pages, $1.50

Rules

Lesser Gnomes's Creature Catalog - Free PDF of new monsters from their modules, Labyrinth Lord stats.

Outer Space Raiders: The Norni -  A new alien race for White Star. 8 pages, 99 cents.

Powers of the Mind: Free Starter Edition - If for some crazy reason you play ACKS, and for some crazier reason you want to add psionics to it, well, here you are. (In either event, my condolences)

Misc

Dungeons in Blue: Triple Expansions Pack One - $8.79 for some dungeon maps.

Rifftrax Riffs The Magic Sword

The Magic Sword is a Bert I. Gordon fantasy movie that influenced D&D at least a little bit, some of the magic spells seem inspired by it. It was already done by MST3K, but for some reason Rifftrax is re-riffing it., I guess because it's public domain and they wouldn't have to pay a licensing fee.

New OSR Products at DTRPG—August 13th, 2015

Really slow week, though both new products look pretty good

Adventures

DAA1 - The Ghost of Jack Cade on London Bridge - The first adventure module for Dark Albion. Strangely, I'm reading a historical mystery by Susanna Gregory set on the London Bridge. Weird place, it had shops and houses on it. And Jack Cade was a leader of an early failed rebellion. $1.99, 22 pages.

Rules

Hyperspace Messenger 06 - Cyberware - 18 pages of rules for cybernetics for White Star and other OSR games. $1.

Magical Theorems & Dark Pacts is DTRPG's Deal of the Day

Basically it's new classes and some magic items for Labyrinth Lord or B/X. Some of it, especially spells are rehashed, but some of the stuff is new. At $3 though, not a bad buy.

New OSR Products at DTRPG — August 6th, 2015

Yay, finally got my truck fixed, so am in a better mood than last week.

Adventures

Mischievous Monsters -  This is a curious adventure because it weights in at a 130 megabytes for 30 pages. Even the preview is 130 megabytes. $3.90 and no levels or specific game listed.

Night of the Mad Kobold - Already mentioned it, free 20 pages adventure

Rules

Outer Space Raiders: Zeloxians -  I'm sure eventually Zelox will be the name of a drug. New alien races, 99 cents, 4 pages.

The Vagrant - A free class from Shane Ward of 3 Toadstools. Sort of a down on his luck thief. 7 pages.

Misc

OSR Sci-Fi Screen - For White Star, but claims to be compatible with other OSR sci-fi games (Hulks & Horrors and Stars Without Number are cited, and there are several more), but most of them actually have rather different rules  so I'm not sure how compatible they would be with it. $4.99 and 8 pages.

Over the Top: Character Primer - A supplement for Labyrinth Lord which isn't about playing arm wrestling truckers but something even more intriguing, fantasy characters on a WW1 style battlefield. Neat concept, little pricey at $3.69 and 17 pages.

The Sandbox #2 - Free e-zine from Sine Nomine features a new class and lifepath generation for SWN. 21 pages.

Night of the Mad Kobold — Free Swords & Wizardry adventure

Free for the time being at least, so grab it while you can. (And if you like it, wait until it's not free and buy it again).

The town of Cresthill enjoys a favorable location along the winding Graywand River. Trade is good, and the prominent gnomes of House Kelver run most of the businesses to the prosperity of the people. Now, however, a dangerous lunatic—a kobold from the nearby Talon Hills—has decided the gnomes of House Kelver need to be a taught a fiery lesson, and only a band of heroes can stop his plot.
WK0 Night of the Mad Kobold is a short adventure designed for a group of six 1st-level characters for the Swords & Wizardry RPG, but compatible with most OSR games (Labyrinth Lord, OSRIC, etc.). It is set in a generic fantasy setting, easily transportable to most fantasy campaigns. It stands alone but can also serve as an introduction to the WRATH OF THE KOBOLDS module trilogy from Cut to the Chase Games.
Eh. I think I would scream if I fought more kobolds, but I guess some people haven't had enough of them.

Better than giant rats. Just please stop including them in modules.

New OSR Products at DTRPG—July 31st, 2015

Woops, forgot this week. But it's not like anyone actually reads this, so...

Adventures

Fort of the Lost Regiment -18 two column pages, $2.50. Not sure for levels it is for

Rules

Galactic Ship Ops - More detailed ship rules for White Star and some new classes. 20 pages, $3

New Class Options - This is 9 new character classes for Swords & Wizardry, "The Blood Witch (arcane spellcaster), Chesh shapeshifting bard type, Forester a tracker survivalist, The Highlander, The Mermaid of the in-land sea , The prodigal a Jack of all trades, the ruca a dog person with inspirational abilities, The Pixie and the Mythwood Elf, and an advance class called a Draken-Knight which is an attempt at a prestige class for the osr".  $1.50 for 23 pages.

Misieres & Misfortunes — Free B/X Supplement for playing in 17th Century France

It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times. Well, I think that's actually a bit later. But at any rate, Miseries & Misfortunes is a free 54 page supplement for B/X games.

Have to register for their store, but it's a small price to pay for something pretty cool.

Changes at Pacesetter Games & Simulations

That is, the company making modules, not the actual old Pacesetter that was bought out a year or two ago by Goblinoid Games.

Anyway, I've been hearing a lot of rumors about slow shipping and what-not, and looks like there is a reason for that.

From: Pacesetter Games & Simulations

Re: Changes at Pacesetter Games & Simulations

Date: July 26, 2015

For many of you this letter may be too little, too late. Pacesetter Games & Simulations is approaching its sixth anniversary, and this should be a time of excitement. However, it has become all too clear, that if PGS is to move forward, significant changes must be initiated.

To be perfectly clear, shipping has been, at best, a roller coaster ride. There have been horrendous delays and errors. I have tried to work through these seemingly incessant shipping disasters. But as soon as I think I have it handled, issues arise and the problems get much worse before they get better. I am not making excuses, and I never have. PGS’s shipping problems are my responsibility.

To run PGS at the level required means I need to devote more time to the company than I have available. It is just that simple. Pacesetter customers deserve better. Pacesetter has enjoyed the patronage of fantastic people throughout the years. Through mismanaged shipping, I have also seen many simply give up. That is on me. For those who have remained, I am grateful and indebted. It is not from anything I have done that so many have remained; in fact, despite my futile efforts, many people have been very supportive. But to be perfectly honest, I am not feeling that I deserve that sort of support. I simply have not done enough.

Gutenberg — Epics and Romances of the Middle Ages

This is a pretty big book with all sorts of different legends mostly from continental Europe.  Dietrich of Bern (who I've never heard of) gets nearly a 100 pages and a bunch of other lesser heroes get about 30 pages each. Then it has Sigfried and the Ring Cycle ( (no Roy though), Beowulf, Roland and other Carolingian heroes, then a bit on King Arthur and finally ending with a guy named Tannhauser.

The illustrations are nice, but seemingly too small to use.

Myrkridder: The Demonic Dead Review

Myrkridder: The Demonic Dead is a small supplement from James Misheler detailing a new type of undead monster. The name sounds like it's something from folklore, but a google search didn't turn up anything except one mention on an RPG blog  which seems quite different. Maybe it means something in German? I dunno.

At any rate, they are undead animated by demonic (or devilish) spirits and thus are intelligent. More than anything, they remind me of the deadite army from Army of Darkness. There are six different types of them, though 3 are just increasingly more powerful variations of the same type, undead soldiers. You have the regular rank and file member (2+2 hit dice), then a sergeant (3+3), and finally a champion (7+7). While the latter two have some minor magical powers, all three primarily attack with weapons, doing base weapon damage. I'll admit that I mostly play 1e, but a 7 hd monster only doing weapon damage (so probably 1d8) seems a bit low even for Basic games. If nothing else, they should have some sort of strength bonus, perhaps a +1 for every hit dice they have.

New OSR Products at DTRPGNow—July 17th, 2015

A bit of a slow week, but two very large (and kinda expensive) adventures.

Adventures

Bug Hunt; A Sci-Fi One-Page Adventure -  For White Star. Pay What You want. (Strictly speaking, the old school term was Scientifiction)

The Gem Prison of Zardax - A puzzle adventure from Zzarchov Kowolski for characters levels 3 to 6. $7.77 and 48 pages.

The Squid, the Cabal, and the Old Man - This is an Lamentations of the Flame Princess adventure, apparently set on Earth during the days of Newton (who I guess is the Old Man). $7.50, 48 pages

Rules

Myrkridder: The Demonic Dead -  This is a short supplement detailing a new type of monster, sort of like the intelligent undead from Army of Darkness. Includes 6 different variations and a racial class version. 15 pages, $1

Revolvers & Wizardry - Was released last week in PDF, this week in Mobi and Epub. $5 each format.

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition getting an expansion pack

Although I considered Baldur's Gate to be new fangled since it wasn't like the Gold Box games or Eye of the Beholder, it was still an AD&D based game and has been extremely popular since it was released, to the point where it received an "enhanced edition" a couple years ago, and now that enhanced edition is getting an expansion pack, Siege of Dragonspear

  • Expand Your Story: Explore new areas, fight new monsters, and win new rewards in the Siege of Dragonspear expansion to Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. Continue the adventure by exporting your game to Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition
  • The Crusade Rises: A sharp and subtle adventure that pits you against an enigmatic new foe
  • Explore the Sword Coast: Venture through vibrant new hand-painted areas in the classic style of the original Baldur’s Gate
  • Gather Your Party: The original cast returns to kick butt for goodness - along with Neera, Rasaad, Dorn, and four new additions!
  • To Infinity and Beyond: Updated UI and improved Infinity Engine features
  • Extra Class: New items, quests, and a new class: the spirit-calling shaman!
  • Venture Forth With A Friend: Functional, extensively tested cross-platform multiplayer on all supported platforms
  • Story Mode: A difficulty setting to allow players to experience all of the story with none of the Game Over screens

Here's a trailer on youtube

Dark Albion: The Rose War -  What would happen if the War of the Roses had happened in a fantasy setting? Well, it wouldn't have happened, since all the things that set up that conflict in the first place never would have happened. But if somehow it did, this book would tell you how. 275 pages, $9.95

PM4 Basic Monsters Set 3 - Hidden Treasures - 37 printable miniatures of Basic monsters. $5

Baffling 1982 D&D ad

Via reddit comes this rather odd ad for D&D from Omni magazine.

I guess trying to capitalize on the George Romero movie Knightriders? Probably not, as that kind flopped. (Too bad that didn't catch on like zombies has)

New OSR Products at DTRPG—July 2nd, 2015

After almost no new adventures last week, we get a bunch this week and not much else.

Adventures

FD5 - Venture into Sordack - Low level Adventures in Filbar module. $3, 20 pages

Giant's Perch - Actually that is the name of a mountain temple that the PCs delve into, not a giant's pet fish. For 4th-6th level characters and nominally for Labyrinth Lord. 28 pages and includes Virtual Table Top maps, $2.50

Peril at the Pod-Auction - Short adventure for White Star, for 1st to 3rd level characters. 12 pages, $1.50.

Return of the Warlock -  Mini module for Swords & Wizardry suitable for 2nd-4th level characters. 10 pages, $1.50

Those Dam Goblins - OSRIC adventure. Have no idea what levels it is for, not even the sample mentions it. 20 pages, $8.

Rules

Hyperspace Messenger 05 - Vehicles - New vehicles for White Star. 20 pages, $1

Dark Albion: The Rose War now available in hardcover

Apparently this is not Dark Ages as I thought (I had heard comparisons to Warhammer), but set in the War of the Roses, but with more of a fantasy twist. The PDF isn't available yet, but the hardcover can be bought at Lulu for $29.24 or in a variant cover with Tom Servo on it.

Crom the Barbarian

This is actually more news to me than actual news, but while looking for old Sci-Fi pulp art for my next module, I came across a magazine called Out of this World Adventures at the Pulp Magazines Project. Apparently it was a 1950 attempt to combine a pulp magazine with a comic book. Apparently it didn't work out, since there were only 2 issues (each featuring a Crom story), but it's actually not a bad magazine at all.

New OSR Products at DTRPG—June 25th, 2015

Not that busy a week, at least if you like adventures.

Hyperspace Messenger 04 - Skills -  This is a skill system for White Star. 12 pages, $1

Paladins of Space - New character class for Labyrinth Lord with a space knight theme. 8 pages, $1. (Kind of funny, since one of the classes I was using in my game was the Stellar Ranger, basically a space ranger)

Wor Born #1: Atlanteans -  This is a supplement from Three Sages games about Atlanteans, who are part of their setting, Wor. Free, 2 pages.
